What Is a Dental Implants?

A dental implant is used to replace one or several teeth or serve as support for a denture. It's a titanium post screwed to the jawbone via surgery.

The implant fuses to the jawbone, replaces the tooth root, and becomes a natural part of the mouth. This makes it a sturdy foundation for your artificial tooth.

Replacing missing teeth with implants preserves the facial structure and prevents adjacent teeth from shifting into empty spaces. Bone deterioration can occur when missing teeth are left unreplaced.

Since implants are surgically attached, removing them requires another visit to the dental office. Unlike dentures or other removable appliances, you won't be able to take them out on your own.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Implants are the gold standard for tooth replacement for many reasons. Here are some of their advantages:

  • Function like natural teeth. The number one advantage of implants is that they work like natural teeth. They restore your chewing and biting force, allowing you to enjoy a wide variety of food without worries.
  • Last a long time. Dental implants can last a lifetime without routine replacement. They're biocompatible too, which means they're non-toxic, and the body won't reject them.
  • Feel comfortable. Dental implants become a part of your mouth. They don't need adhesives to secure them. There's no chance of them slipping out and causing embarrassment.
  • Improve oral health. Implants don't require reducing adjacent teeth for them to fit in, which preserves your natural smile. Filling empty spaces keeps remaining teeth from shifting and helps you clean your mouth more easily. Without gaps, you avoid food debris from getting stuck in your mouth.
  • Boost confidence. A dental implant restores your confidence and helps get you back into your social circle again. You can interact with people without fear of mumbled or slurred speech or your device coming off.
  • Prevent bone shrinkage. The jawbone can deteriorate over time without the teeth to stimulate it. A dental implant helps prevent this, as it encourages bone growth.

How Does Getting a Dental Implant Work?

  • Getting dental implants typically takes two visits. The following are the usual steps involved in the process:
  • Implants are embedded into your jawbone. The site is allowed to heal for 3-6 months until the implants fuse with the jawbone. While waiting, avoiding pressure on the area and sticking to a soft food diet helps.
  • Once the bone integration is complete, you return to the office so your dentist or oral surgeon can place the abutment, or posts, that will serve as anchors for your artificial teeth.
  • Your dental team takes an impression of your teeth to ensure your new teeth fit and look good. The last step is fitting and attaching the crown or replacement tooth.
  • During your routine dental visits, we check your implants to ensure they're working well.
  • Here at Vita Dental Wellness, we administer local anesthesia for your comfort. You may also opt for sedation if you want to feel extra calm and relaxed during the procedure.

Are Dental implants Suitable for Me?

Most patients can receive dental implants. If you're missing one or several teeth, implants may be able to offer the solution you're looking for.

If you've tried dentures before and are unhappy about wearing a removable device, an implant can be a great alternative.

Before, having healthy and sufficient bone to qualify for an implant was a must. Though, now, there are ways you can receive one even with an inadequate jawbone.
